The Staff House at Camp Shalom has served campers and staff for many decades. But the building’s age and the needs of camp operations today, have left camp at a crossroad where it is no longer viable to update or repair it to meet today’s needs.
The Camp Shalom Board of Directors has made the decision to have a capital campaign to provide the funding for a new Shalom Lodge.
Health Care Center: Healthcare at camps is becoming more complex every year. During most weeks of summer camp, it is necessary to have two healthcare coordinators to manage the medications sent along for campers. The new building’s design will provide space on the main floor for healthcare operations and for caring for campers who need to be isolated from others for health reasons.
Retreat Facility: During the off-season, the facility will offer small-group retreat housing. With a capacity to sleep 16 on the main floor and an additional 16 upstairs, the building will be well-suited to serve a variety of groups. Equipped with heating and air conditioning, it will be available for year-round events. The main room will feature a gathering space and a kitchenette.
Staff Housing: The staff leadership and some senior staff members utilized the original staff house for sleeping quarters and office space. The original staff house, built in the early years of Camp Shalom, was evaluated but found to be unsalvageable, so it was removed to make room for the new building. In addition to sleeping quarters, a quiet space is needed where staff can perform administrative work.
Safe Storm Shelter: As the camp has grown, so has the need for more emergency shelter areas. When severe weather is forecast for nighttime, it is better for campers and staff to sleep in a safe area rather than being woken up and asked to seek shelter. The lower level of the new building will have concrete walls and will provide a safe storm shelter.
